It started as a small bakery space in Scarborough.
Nothing flashy. Just a place where people could get a good meal and feel welcome.
Over time, something else happened. Customers kept coming back. Families grew up with it. Regulars became part of the story.
That’s how The Real McCoy Burgers & Pizza became what it is today.
Our History
How It Started
It started with a small bakery space in Scarborough and a simple goal, serve good food and treat people right. Louie Mihail wasn’t trying to build something big, just something steady for his family. Over time, customers kept coming back, bringing friends, then family, until it became part of the neighbourhood.
Growing With The Community
As Scarborough grew, so did the restaurant. Pizza was added alongside burgers, giving people more to come back for, whether it was a quick stop after school or an easy meal on the way home. By 1986, George was working full-time, putting in long days to keep things running the right way.
The Mojo Burger
The burger was already a favourite before it had a name. When a Mojo Radio 640 AM contest came around, George entered with the same homemade burger they served every day and won. It became known as the Mojo Burger, an 8oz classic with bacon and cheese that people still tell you to order first.
Keeping It Going
When Louie passed away, there was no guarantee the restaurant would continue. George and his wife Sophie stepped in and carried it forward, keeping everything the same, from the recipes to the way the food was made. It wasn’t about changing things, it was about protecting what people relied on.
The Notice
After more than 50 years in the same location, they were told the building would be demolished. Six months to leave, after decades in one place. For many customers, it didn’t feel like just another closure, it felt like losing a place they counted on.
The Final Day
On the final day, a winter storm hit the city, but people still showed up. They stood in line for hours, not just for food, but to be there one last time. It was a reminder of how much the place meant to families, regulars, and the surrounding community.
The Return
Less than a year later, the doors opened again at a new location on Lawrence Avenue East. Same recipes, same approach, nothing changed where it mattered. And just like before, people came back, some out of habit, others bringing someone new with them.
Still The Same
More than 50 years later, the focus is still the same, serve good food and take care of people. Whether it’s a quick stop, a family meal, or feeding a group, people know what they’re getting. And that’s what keeps them coming back.
